1st YEAR'S CLOSET PART 1: SCULPTURE

These are some of my favorite works during the 1st year of art school. I'll try to remember each and every description of the project and what it means...well I'll try.

So let's start off with one of my favorite classes: SCULPTURE

REMIX
sculpture
Mixed media: old clarinet, wood, paint, etc. etc.

DETAILING

This piece is called REMIX and it is made for the project Remixed found object ... clever huh? Anyways, this project is supposed to be for us to combine existing objects and create a new interesting ...uh... object. So here it is, the product of one of my favorite bulls*it.

The "meaning" behind this object is supposed to be about opposing elements: discord and harmony. I remember having a really long discussion about what it means but I actually don't remember what I said...along the lines "this is about my life and childhood" or some ridiculous explanation about how a human's life is all about keeping your composure and sometimes letting go...I know, it doesn't makes sense to me either.
But I guess you can interpret what you see and for me that is what makes a good piece of art...critique to your heart's content!
For me though, I just wanted to attempt to create something badass. Superficial I know. But you know what?! Suck it! No just kidding. I've always wanted to create a musical instrument that is also a weapon, so I thought this was the best project to do just that.

ps: don't worry the clarinet is already broken and beyond repair. It has played its last noted long ago.

pps: i actually never seen this version before and I promise you I did not copy it!

100 YEARS
Installation
Mixed media: paper, wood

Detailing

One of my most laborious creations. 4 weeks of pain, agony, blood and sweat....no joke. Who knew constructing a coffin is soo painful!
This is a project called Negative Space. We were supposed to utilize and interpret what negative space means to us. We were limited in our medium: cardboard and wood (2x4)
This is the project that made me realize that If I didn't get in the design department, I would love to be a sculptor. This is also the project that made me appreciate the Zen/Buddhist philosophy on the negative space called Ma. Because of this new appreciation of negative space, I've always, ALWAYS use ma in all of my designs.
My interpretation of negative space for this project is the moments in between life and death. I took the liberty to base it on my life and how I appreciate all those moments, happy or not. I constructed 100 paper flowers and gave 19 flowers to my classmates and asked them to question why I made this sculpture (+ points for me for involving the whole class). The 19 flowers I said also represented the 19 years I have lived on this earth. The other 81 flowers represent the years I've wanted to live more.
Hence, the name of the piece.

Purely Aesthetic
Sculpture
Mixed media: plaster bandage, ribbon, paper, etc. etc.

Detailing

Ok this post is getting too long so I'll make is short and sweet!
  • My favorite piece I've ever made in that class
  • Really laborious, took about 4 weeks worth...no joke.
  • Started as another bulls*it piece, I just wanted to make something out of paper again
  • The meaning behind this: A man's view of the feminine beauty and sexuality
  • some deeper meaning that was formed during the process
    • objectification of women
    • commodity of the idealized woman form
    • loss of innocence to adulthood
    • inner beauty vs. superficial beauty.
  • Hands down my most favorite piece yet.

watch out for Part 2: Drawing next few days!
